COlleen Clark Lay, LCSW

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Aurora University (Aurora, IL) with my Bachelor and Master of Social Work Degrees and a double minor in Psychology and Sociology, I have provided counseling to individuals and couples for 20+ years. My unique approach to individual counseling is to treat the whole person. A healthy self is made up of physical, emotional, and spiritual components. All of which need nurturing to feel happy and fulfilled. I can assist you in finding just the right balance for your life.

"My outlook was pessimistic, I wasn't treating people the way I knew I should. I was unable to believe in relationships and commitment. I was destroying myself with reckless decisions and painting myself into a corner of hopelessness. Finally, I knew it was time to make "the call". From the moment I started therapy, I felt a sense of relief. Colleen offers many different ways to take accountability for your own life and the actions you choose to make. She will help you on your way to better choices. More than anything, you will learn to place value where it is most important. You will gain an appreciation for those around you, and you will find places in your heart that you never knew existed. Please don't be afraid to make the call as well if you want to see yourself grow mentally, physically, and even spiritually too. Calling Colleen might very well be the first crucial step on your road to a happier life."

My approach to couples counseling is to treat each of the components of the relationship. There are three parties in the relationship. The you, the partner, and the relationship. In that process, my role is to be on the side of the relationship. During that journey, I will teach each partner to speak in language the other can understand. Resulting in your ability to hear each other and grow together.

Couples counseling is often perceived to be only for people that are in a love relationship. However, couples counseling is also for partners that were once in a love relationship that is now ending/is over and both parties wish to learn how to co-parent while not in love/living in the same house. In any of these scenarios, the spaces on my couch are for people that are willing to do the work of counseling. It takes Courage to Change and Live your most successful life.

"We came into counseling not really knowing what to expect, we were both nervous and guarded. We are impressed with how quickly Colleen can process what we say, explain to each of us how or why the other may feel a certain way, then make suggestions or have us come up with ideas for change. Our homework is actually helping us to get where we would like to be in our relationship. She has never been judgmental, nor does she pick sides, but always seems to find a middle ground. She is fair, easy to talk to and fun. This road we are on, working through a difficult time in our marriage, is not easy. We are fortunate to have been referred to Colleen and thankful she is helping us through this journey."
